Bridge workers and truck drivers helped rescue a man who attempted to take a fatal plunge off the Tappan Zee Wednesday.

Two or three truck drivers saw the man first and stopped to help. Bridge electrician Eddie Vasquez then rushed over and started talking to the would-be jumper, Charles Bridle, of Cortlandt Manor.

"He was over the rail already when I got there," Vasquez says. "I started talking to him about, 'Don't jump, don't do it.'" Vasquez says Bridle, 40, told him he was upset because his car was going to be repossessed and that he was going to lose his job. "I told him, 'You're not alone,'" Vasquez says.

Fellow bridge worker Ernie Feeney, who has made two similar bridge rescues, heard the call over the radio and came to assist Vasquez. The pair eventually wrestled Bridle to the ground. Vasquez says Bridle thanked him before state police took him to Westchester Medical Center.

In the past two weeks, three people have jumped to their deaths from the span.
