SWAT teams catch suspect in Larchmont bank heist
Police say they?ve captured the suspect who allegedly caught Larchmont bank employees off guard in a botched robbery attempt Monday.
Police said 24-year-old Elton Kulli removed a pane of glass from the back door of a Chase Bank on Boston Post Road, disabled the alarm and waited for employees to arrive for the day.
Kulli then allegedly held up workers shortly after they opened the bank around 8:30 a.m. William Vallar, the father of the branch?s manager, said his son endured some frightening moments.
"My son did tell me [the robber] held a gun to the back of his head," Vallar said.
Authorities said a bank employee was able to tip off a gas station worker across the street about the robbery. Larchmont and Mamaroneck SWAT teams then swarmed the bank.
Police said they nabbed Kulli outside as he tried to get away with the cash in his car.
Responders then combed the bank from top to bottom to ensure Kulli was working alone. "We didn't want to take any chances," said SWAT team member Antonio Rigano. "We made sure everyone was cleared out of the first floor again and an attic space that was substantial in size."
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Footage of Kulli's arrest and a police interview are available on digital iO cable box channel 612; select iO Extra.
