Suspects in retired officer's shooting face judge
Two Elmsford men faced a judge Tuesday on charges that they shot a retired Greenburgh police officer.
Taqiy Walton and Adam Larregue are charged with the attempted murder of former Officer Peter Schmidt.
Officials say Schmidt, a 20-year veteran of the force, was keeping an eye on his neighbor's home on Payne Avenue when there was an apparent burglary. Schmidt, 55, confronted the men and was shot twice, according to authorities.
In Greenburgh Town Court, the suspects were served orders of protection against a witness of the shooting.
Schmidt's son, an off-duty officer, ran to the scene and observed the suspects fleeing in a blue BMW. He then wrote down the suspects' license plate. A short time later, Yonkers police nabbed the suspects on the Bronx River Parkway.
Investigators recovered a loaded 9mm handgun along a grassy area on the southbound side of the Sprain Brook Parkway near Tuckahoe Road.
Schmidt has since been released from Westchester Medical Center and is recovering at home.
Grand jury proceedings in the case will begin Thursday.
