A Bellport teenager and suspected Bloods gang member was arraigned by hospital bedside Wednesday in connection with a crash that killed his brother and a Middle Island couple.
Police say 17-year-old Nahriek Belford has no prior arrests but has been identified as a member of the gang.
Belford pleaded not guilty to a reckless endangerment charge while lying in his hospital bed in the burn unit at Stony Brook University Hospital.
Investigators say the teen was driving a stolen car and blew a stop sign in Yaphank Saturday night when police tried to pull him over. Police say he fled, went through multiple red lights and even drove into oncoming traffic.
On Middle Country Road, investigators say the teen crossed the double yellow line to pass another car and then slammed into the Honda CRV carrying Jerome and Randee Weingarten, killing them.
The Weingartens were just about to turn into their housing complex after dining with friends.
The crash also killed the suspect's brother.
News 12 was in the room during the arraignment. Belford had obvious burns to his forehead, and his right arm was in a cast. Bail was set at $500,000 cash or bond.
Charges against Belford are expected to be upgraded.
