Suspect in Brewster DWI crash pleads not guilty
The suspect in a drunken driving accident that killed a mother and her young daughter in Brewster pleaded not guilty before a judge in Putnam County Court Wednesday.
Conses-Garcia Zacarias, who authorities say has been living in the U.S. illegally for eight years, pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide. Prosecutors say Zacarias' reckless driving resulted in the deaths of Lori and Kayla Donahue on June 8.
According to investigators, the 35-year-old Zacarias was drunk at nearly twice the legal limit when he mowed down Donahue and her 8-year-old daughter as they left the Seven Stars dance studio near the intersection of Route 6 and Route 22.
Zacarias was originally charged with vehicular homicide, but prosecutors say video of the incident captured by a surveillance camera led to their decision to upgrade the charges against him.
Zacarias is scheduled to return to court July 22. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years behind bars. He may also face deportation.
