Suspect arrested in fatal Mount Vernon shooting
A Mount Vernon man is accused of gunning down a neighbor inside his apartment building.
The shooting occurred at 70 West Third St. Friday night.
Jilyan Reeves, 38, was found inside a building stairwell with multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities say Reeves was visiting someone in the building when he was killed. Police believe the victim and suspect knew each other.
Investigators say surveillance footage led them to finding the suspect, 28-year-old Philip Copeland.
Copeland was arrested on weapons charges. He was arraigned Monday and is due back in court Dec. 19.
Authorities say they expect to charge him with murder once evidence comes back after examining the weapon.
Police say Copeland has a prior record and served time in 2011 for burglary.
Those who knew Reeves say he was a father, and his family is reeling from his loss.
