SUNY Purchase says it has added water filters and hydration stations to common areas throughout campus after elevated levels of lead were found in the water.

The school tested the water for contamination last spring following complaints from students. Of the over 2,000 samples taken, about 10 percent showed elevated levels of lead.  The school said the results were enough to take action.

"Our initial response was to make sure there was suitable drinking water in every single residential unit on campus,” says Mike Kopas, SUNY Purchase campus facilities director.

Kopas says the water is safe to drink. To assure students, the school sent email updates and held meetings to keep everyone informed.

The school has also brought in an environmental engineer to find a long-term solution. In the meantime, they will be spot-sampling water fountains and sinks throughout campus to make sure the water stays safe.
