The hot and humid weather has prompted heat warnings and advisories for parts of Nassau and Suffolk counties.
News 12's Danielle Campbell was at Northwell Health in Syosset Friday where Dr. Parveen Mital said neighbors should be looking out for each other as the temperatures climb this weekend.
"Try to stay indoors, hydrate, stay cool," says Dr. Mital.
The heat didn't stop some workers from their duties outdoors.
State Department of Transportation foreman John McNeil spoke with News 12 in the afternoon while his road crew dealt with muggy conditions.
"On days like today when it is extremely hot, our guys are told hydrate, keep an eye out for one another - make sure everyone looks good," said McNeil.
McNeil is urging drivers to move over if they see a road crew outside in order to create a safer situation for workers.
If you suspect someone may be suffering from a heat-related illness, doctors say to get the victim out of the sun and into a cool place, offer fluids that do not contain alcohol or caffeine, encourage the person to shower or bathe in cool water and seek medical assistance if the symptoms persist.
