Suffern water main blows off manhole, hits power lines
A water main broke on Route 202 in Suffern Thursday, knocking off a manhole cover and spraying water 50 feet into the air.
The main ruptured at around 3 p.m. and hit active power lines. The flow has since been turned off.
Officials said a failed air valve was the likely cause.
Residents continued to have water and power, officials reported.
Police happened to have been nearby doing a commercial vehicle check when the main erupted, according to Suffern Mayor Patricia Abato.
Route 202 was expected to reopen overnight, after repairs and a safety check.
