Students from South High School found a touching way to pay tribute to a Rockland County man who died in the 9/11 attacks.
Welles Crowther, also known as the man in the red bandana, grew up in Nyack and volunteered as a firefighter. Crowther died on 9/11 after saving 12 people from the burning south tower.
In Crowther's honor, the student body and faculty wore red bandanas,
Those he rescued say the 24-year-old equities trader was using the bandana to protect his face from all the smoke, dust and debris as he helped direct and carry people to safety from the 78th floor.
The money raised through bandana sales is going to a trust set up in Crowther's honor and will help provide scholarships to young people who serve their communities.
