Student stabbing suspect case delayed
The case against a Spring Valley High School student, accused of stabbing a fellow student, couldn't move forward today.
Police say Christopher Bermeo, 16, stabbed a 17-year-old student four times during a fight at the school on Monday. Bermeo faces charges of attempted murder as an adult.
Bermeo appeared at Spring Valley Justice Court, but the judge delayed the proceeding because the grand jury could not convene since the victim had to be brought back to the hospital for more treatment. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.
Bermeo claimed in court he had been bullied at school and was just defending himself. Supporters of Bermeo showed up at the court today wearing T-shirts claiming his innocence.
Today, the judge refused to lower the bail, which was set at $500,000. Bermeo's attorney Benjamin Greenwald says that bail was set way too high since the 16-year-old is not a flight risk. Greenwald says his client is sitting in jail because neither Bermeo or his parents have that kind of money.
