Pleasantville schools kicked off their hybrid model and brought some kids back to the classroom today.

Because of the district's size, all three schools are starting the year with Mondays being a remote day for everyone.

Every day students and staff must complete an online health check, wear a mask in the building, and each building has brand new filters.

The district has even installed nearly 100 touchless sanitizer and handwashing stations throughout the buildings.

About half of the students in the district are back in class today learning in-person for the first time in months. "They've done everything that they can. They've followed the protocols, they've set up teams, and gotten the parents involved, the administrators involved," says parent Donna Gates.

The hybrid model is making class sizes extremely small. One English teacher tells News 12 she has only three kids one period.

The reopening comes right after three religious leaders tested positive for coronavirus at a local church.

Last week, two priests and a church staffer tested positive for coronavirus and potentially exposed many churchgoers over multiple days of services, including staff and students.

Anyone who attended those services is currently quarantining, and school reopening is still underway.

Pleasantville Superintendent of Schools Mary Fox-Alter says the hybrid model was built for incidents like this where students in quarantine can start the year fully remote until they can safely return to class.
