Parishioners played a big role in getting a Catholic church in Mamaroneck to reopen.

Most Holy Trinity Church on Boston Post Road has been a beacon of light for 135 years.

When the archdiocese forced its closure five years ago, citing dwindling finances and enrollment, it left a hole in the heart of longtime parishioner Tommy O'Neill.

Instead of giving up and accepting defeat, O'Neill and fellow parishioner James Maver decided to fight.

They appealed the forced closure by the archdiocese, all the way to the Vatican in Rome – and won.

The parishioners received a letter from Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, where he informed he would reverse his decision and allow it to reopen.

The news had members of the congregation celebrating.

Most Holy Trinity is scheduled to be opened to the public a few times a year, but the plan among loyal members is to one day resume weekly Mass and pack its pews again.
