The New Rochelle School District has decided to go fully remote for the first month of September, according to school administrators.
New Rochelle school officials made their announcement during a Zoom meeting Thursday night.
With approximately 10,000 students, the New Rochelle School District was the first school district in New York state to close due to the pandemic back in March. The city was ground zero for the coronavirus in New York and made national headlines.
School administrators say the hope is to go to a hybrid model after September, where some days students are in class and some days they're home.
New Rochelle is the third district in the area to make this decision. On Thursday, the Suffern School District announced that it would be all virtual for the month of September.  The Wappingers Central School District has also announced that it will begin its school year fully remote.
Some surrounding districts are giving parents the option to keep their kids at home if they chose.
New Rochelle school officials say the goal is to go to their hybrid model for in classroom learning, but they want to see what happens with other schools before they move forward with that plan.
