The Family Services of Westchester has created a pandemic supportive services program that helps anyone who tested positive.
Yonkers resident Herbert Karel says he’s been under quarantine for six weeks since testing positive for COVID-19 on two separate occasions.
"I have a computer. I keep myself busy on the computer and I do games, all kinds of Microsoft games,” says Karel.
Since Karel is unable to leave his house, the Family Services of Westchester is assisting him.
The program provides free food, PPE and access to other services.
"It's definitely a great need for this program,” says Karel. "It keeps people like me from having to go shopping. I'm staying in the house.”
To ensure clients have everything they need while under quarantine, caseworkers check in every day.
"I have a social aide that calls me once or twice a day and is really nice,” says Karel.
So far, 80 families have been helped since the program's launch last month.
It has paid particular attention to assisting Black and Latino families - two communities impacted disproportionately by COVID-19.
