The Port Chester community held a vigil Saturday for Vanessa Guillen, a 20-year-old U.S. Army soldier found dead near her base in Texas.
Guillen's family once lived in Port Chester. People gathered in Lyon Park to remember Guillen, whose badly beaten body was found in a shallow grave near Fort Hood last month following her disappearance two months ago.
Authorities say another soldier, suspected in her killing, took his own life as the military investigation closed in.
Some at the vigil knew Guillen, while others did not - but all felt the need to gather in her memory.
The secretary of the Army has ordered an independent review of operations at Fort Hood.
