A Yorktown college student is dancing again - one month after having brain surgery - thanks to a surgeon she met in person just minutes before her surgery.
Katelyn Bloss says she credits her family, her medical team and brain surgeon Dr. Joshua Bederson, whom she mostly knew from their virtual meetings.
Her medical journey began in March when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Her surgery was held off until June, and every decision relating to her treatment was complicated by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
It meant no in-person doctor visits with Dr. Bederson. He had to map out her entire complicated surgery without them ever actually physically meeting.
Telemedicine is not new, and Dr. Bederson says he has used it on out-of-state patients, but never on a local patient until Bloss.
"She was in a stretcher ready to be rolled back into the OR when I saw her for the first time - five minutes before she was wheeled into surgery," he says.
Three months after her diagnosis and a month after her surgery, Bloss says she has never been better.
"I've learned to be grateful for everything in my life and my health," she says.
