People can now visit their loved ones at group homes across Westchester and the Hudson Valley.

As of today, the state is finally allowing visitors at group homes. That includes group homes like one in Yorktown Heights, which will be following strict guidelines, including social distancing and wearing masks as the fight against the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The pause on visitation at group homes was essential to saving lives, according to Westchester Arc, which runs the group home.

Last month, News 12 featured Joe Mojsak, a father of one of the residents in Yorktown Heights who hasn't seen David, his 31-year-old son with Down syndrome, since March.

Joe said it was especially upsetting that David may not fully understand why he couldn't see his family.

Although they were able to FaceTime daily, his parents say it was not the same. As of today, the family can finally reunite.

The Mojsaks tell News 12 it’s been three tough months staying away—but they are relieved to finally be allowed to visit their son.

“It’s joyful it’s like seeing a beautiful thing...that smile,” says Mojsak.

Hospitals are also welcoming back visitors with safety guidelines in place, including face coverings. Hard-hit nursing homes are still off limits to visitors.
