Racist and sexist posts on Snapchat have sparked outrage at Iona Preparatory school in New Rochelle.
The Snaps were allegedly sent by an Iona Prep football player - his teammates tell News 12 that it's not the first instance of racism they have seen at the predominantly white Catholic school.
Screenshots of the Snapchats from about two weeks ago called those who participated in the Black Out Tuesday social media campaign animals and nematodes.
Four graduating senior football players spoke out against the racist post at the foot of a Martin Luther King Jr. statue in White Plains, calling for more action by the school.
"It's just painful when I see people on my football team, people who I go to school with every day, they are supposed to be my brothers but in a time of need they don't stand up for us," says Keshawn McDowdell, a graduating senior.
The football players say the alleged incident was swept under the rug by school administrators, that the player was allegedly kicked off the team and those who are trying to speak out about it are being silenced.
"We are trying to start conversations and if they don't want to listen or learn about our stories and how we live and how we are raised and the things we go through on a daily basis, it's going to be hard to have change," says graduating senior Jordan Dunbar.
The four college-bound students say they have experienced many instances of racism at Iona Prep by students and teachers, and hope that by speaking out, they pave a path of inclusivity, acceptance and accountability for future students of color.
The young men are also calling for more diversity within staff at Iona Preparatory and to see more education on racism.
Iona Preparatory said, “It is inappropriate for a school to comment on or share the details of individual student matters, especially when they are minors. Disciplinary action is being taken. Iona Preparatory has already taken significant steps to address the issue of racial justice.”
