Drivers are being urged to slow down as the first mother snapping turtle of the season crossed the Western Highway in Blauvelt Friday.
The reptiles annually migrate in the area to lay their eggs. However, it is a dangerous trek across the road. Volunteers from the organization, The Turtles of the Western Highway, work nearby the turtles' path to help them turn back to the wetlands.
The group is asking residents to drive slowly and give the turtles time to cross the road safely.
