While most people are all staying at home, a new report shows auto thefts are on the rise during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Westchester District Attorney's Office tells News 12 there's been more than a 50% uptick in stolen cars countywide.

From January to March, thefts of automobiles jumped 57.4% from the same time last year.

In April alone, 69 vehicles were reported stolen - a 93% spike from last year.

Westchester District Attorney Anthony Scarpino says the majority were preventable.

"The vehicles are left unattended, unlocked, and most of them have the fobs in the car," he says. "It's possible that people themselves are saying to themselves...'I'm home now, no one's going to come on my driveway and try to do this.'"

When it comes to personal belongings being stolen from inside vehicles, Scarpino says, "You can't leave items there for them to see. If you're going to leave anything in the car, it should be in the trunk or where it's out of sight. If you leave a coat, you may say to yourself who's going to be interested in a coat. They are interested. They'll take a coat. They don''t know what's underneath a coat."

The big takeaways are clean out and make sure to lock up.

Officials say the majority of cases come out of Rye, Rye Brook, Harrison, Eastchester, New Rochelle and Mamaroneck.
