Ulster County District Attorney Dave Clegg says homicide or manslaughter charges are now being considered in the case of Steven Augustine – who fought on life support for two years before recently falling victim to coronavirus-like symptoms.
Augustine had been in a coma and on a ventilator since he was attacked in 2018. The man responsible, Charles Miles, served one year behind bars after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault.
News 12 reported last month that Steven’s mother Donna Augustine says her son's case was mishandled by Kingston police and the Ulster County District Attorney's Office. She alleges they covered for Miles because he was a confidential informant and says prosecutors insisted her son was only punched once in the face, despite his visible injuries.
DA Clegg says the state’s double jeopardy law may not apply in this case as they investigate further.
Donna Augustine says she is grateful for the coverage and is hopeful that justice will be served.
