A local nonprofit is delivering a massive number of diapers to mothers in need.
A small team of volunteers is set to deliver 267,000 diapers to pregnant women and disadvantaged mothers across the tri-state.
"Mothers can't find them on the shelves. In many cases, mothers are out of work, their kids are home from school, they're desperate," says Chris Slattery, founder of Expectant Mother Care.
Many are suffering due to the financial stress of the coronavirus pandemic.
Most local stores are stripped clean of diapers and other basic necessities for babies, toddlers and children, leaving many people scrambling to take proper care of their kids.
“Going to a store hoping there's at least you know, one of the two items you need but sometimes you go into some of these stores and there's completely nothing,” says single mother of two Precious Valerio. "It gets very frustrating.”
Volunteers are organizing the diapers into six sizes. The items will then be sent out to 30 different pregnancy centers and charities across New York City, as well as Westchester, Rockland and Fairfield counties.
"We're all out pitching in because we know that there is a strong need right now," says Slattery.
