Fuel the Fight, a grassroots organization that started in Philadelphia, is raising money to support Westchester restaurants and feed front-line workers at hospitals.
On Thursday, 150 meals were prepared for the health care workers at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers.
The meals were prepared by Pete's Tavern and Underhill's Crossing, both restaurants in Bronxville.
"We just want the businesses to keep honestly serving us. So once we are allowed out of our homes and are allowed to go out and eat again, go to the bars again, we want them to be there for us just as they have always been," says Richard Hurley, of Fuel the Fight Westchester.
Hurley helped launch Fuel the Fight Westchester over the weekend. It has raised more than $6,000 in just a few days.
The money is paying for the meals being delivered to local hospitals and helping local businesses like Underhill's Crossing and Pete's Tavern.
Underhill's Crossing owner Steven Palm says he's filling some takeout orders, but business hasn't been the same since the coronavirus pandemic started last month.
"We are not doing remotely close to what we need to do to survive, to pay all of our bills and be compensated for the work that we are doing," he says.
Organizers say they want to support more local businesses through donations that will feed doctors and nurses dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
