Orange County declares state of emergency; COVID-19 cases at 3

Posted: Updated:

Orange County officials confirmed that the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus jumped from one on Thursday to three on Friday.

As a result, Orange County has issued a state of emergency, as have the towns of Wallkill and Montgomery.

News 12 is told that one of the confirmed cases is a person from Monroe. All three of the patients were tested at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh, and one patient is still there. Officials say the other two patients are under mandatory isolation in their homes.

Officials are now advising all school districts in the county to close for two weeks, starting on Monday.

Nearly half a dozen school districts in Orange already closed Friday after word that either students, household members or staff are under quarantine. Health officials say anyone in contact with those three patients, including healthcare workers, are under self-quarantine.

Hospitals and major health care facilities are vamping up their screening efforts. Orange Regional Medical Center in the town of Wallkill is seeing patients with symptoms outside in a triage tent.

A viewer also sent in video to News 12 showing Crystal Run health care workers in West Nyack screening patients outside in their cars, wearing masks and protective clothing.
