Fears of coronavirus exposure shut down 2 school districts in Westchester

Posted: Updated:

Two school districts announced they will be closed through the weekend after some students were possibly exposed to coronavirus.

In Mount Vernon, all 16 schools are closed for the rest of the week as two students from the district are under quarantine. The students are siblings who attend Columbus and Rebecca Turner elementary schools, and their family has been quarantined for possible exposure to the virus.

District officials tell News 12 that the students' mother may have had direct contact with the New Rochelle attorney who tested positive for coronavirus because the mother works at the hospital where he was taken.

Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton made a decision to close the schools Thursday and Friday in Mount Vernon as a precautionary measure.

Schools are expected to reopen Monday.

Schools are also closed in the Hastings-on-Hudson school district because district officials say the parent of a student came into contact with a person who is now under quarantine for possible coronavirus exposure.

In a statement to News 12, the superintendent of Hastings-on-Hudson schools said, "A district parent was present in a location that is closed due to a confirmed case of the coronavirus," and, "out of an abundance of caution, the Hastings-on-Hudson Union Free School District is closing all schools for two days."

The city’s first responders are also preparing in the event of a coronavirus with high-risk kits and masks.
