Cuomo says state will be committing $40 million in funding to add staff, equipment and resources toward detecting and combating the virus.
Yesterday, it was confirmed that a 39-year-old health care worker from Manhattan returning from Iran tested positive for the virus.
The woman and her husband, who was also on that trip, are now isolated at home. Her husband has been tested, but results are not back yet.
The state is taking precautions at schools and on public transportation by instituting new cleaning protocols.
And New York will be allowed to do its own testing for the coronavirus after getting the go ahead from the CDC. The governor says this is a good thing, because results will come back sooner.
Cuomo is hoping to test up to 1,000 people a day by the end of this week. He says testing is the key to preventing an outbreak. “There is no doubt there will be more cases where we find people who test positive. We said early on it wasn’t a question of if, but when.”
Officials say they are focusing heavily on facilities that treat senior citizens and immune compromised individuals.
Meanwhile, they are urging basic hygiene to prevent the spread. That includes covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze and washing your hands frequently.
