Fire officials: 1 dead, 3 injured in 4-alarm fire at Yonkers apartment buildingPosted: Updated:
Officials say one person has died and three were injured in a fire at a four-story apartment building in Yonkers Sunday evening.
The four-alarm fire at 112 Saratoga Ave. started just before 8 p.m.
Neighbors say they heard people screaming inside the building during the fire.
"We couldn't see nothing, the whole building was pitch black. We don't know what happened,” says one resident.
One person was forced to jump from a third story window to escape the flames.
It took firefighters more than three hours to get the flames under control. Most residents had escaped with only the clothes on their backs.
"I came out and saw thick black smoke. I went in the house and told my granddaughter get out, got my dog and we just came out," says one survivor.
The conditions of the injured victims are currently unknown.
The Red Cross is helping at least 33 people from eight families who were displaced by the fire.
