Clarkstown is the first municipality in Rockland to offer charging stations for eco-friendly cars.
News 12 is told four chargers are currently available at Town Hall for public use. The first two hours are free of charge. It is $2.50 for each additional hour.
The charging terminals were predominantly paid for with a $16,000 grant from the state.
New City resident Michael Schilale says it’s simple to keep his Tesla fully charged.
“If you forget to plug in one night, you can come here and get a lot more miles a lot quicker,” he says. “It's a win-win for everyone, for the environment, for the consumer.”
Clarkstown officials say they wanted to obtain a positive and inevitable advancement once they were aware of the grant funding.
"This is really the wave of the future,” says Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann. “I know a lot of residents that are starting to buy electric vehicles, and it's only going to improve."
According to local officials, there will be more electric charging areas available in Clarkstown fairly soon. Given the state's goal to curb greenhouse-gas emissions by 40% by 2030, residents may see more stations in a matter of time.
“Even all the car manufacturers already said in the next 8 or 10 years, they'll be phased out and be all electric. It is the future,” says Sheldon Horowtiz, of New City.
