A single-car crash in Orange County claimed the life of a county health inspector Wednesday.

Officials say 28-year-old Tom Walter, from Warwick, died around 9 a.m. after crashing a county-owned car into a tree.

The accident happened along Route 17A in the town of Goshen.

Walter was taken to Orange Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say Walter had been with the Orange County Health Department since 2017.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus released a statement about the tragedy saying, "We are all deeply saddened by Tom's passing and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. Tom was a valued County employee and we mourn his passing."

Sheriff's deputies and state police shut down the area to traffic between Durland Road and Industrial Drive for hours during their investigation and accident reconstruction.

There is no word on what caused the crash.
