DPWs across the Hudson Valley are preparing for the first winter storm of 2020.
News 12 meteorologists say some areas could get up to 5 inches of snow on Saturday before changing over to freezing rain or all rain.
Snow will be moderate to heavy at times once it arrives and through early evening. Roads will be icy and snow covered during the afternoon and early evening.
DPW works say any spots that get 2 inches or less would be more of a salt/sand event because that's just not enough for the shovels to pick up. The good news is that because it's been a very mild winter so far, crews across the Hudson Valley should have plenty of salt and sand to spread across the roadways. "We're all topped off. We have 6,000 gallons of brine on hand. We have 8,000 tons of salt on hand. We have plenty of ice control sand on hand. Truck are ready," says White Plains Highway Superintendent Rick Stangarone.
Stangarone says White Plains recently added a new brine making system and they now doing it all here on site rather than get the mixture from the county.
The plan is to begin pre-treating the roads today. "We'll be running it all day today, you'll see all the little white lines all over the road. It really helps a lot it does help the ice and snow to not stick on the roads."
The other good news is that since it is a Saturday there will be less cars on the roads.
