The city is celebrating five years of its IDNYC program with some big announcements – the addition of braille to the cards and a new regional partner.
The mayor's office says IDNYC has more than 1 million cardholders, making it the largest municipal ID card program in the country.
The card allows residents to access city services, enter city buildings and have proof of identification when interacting with law enforcement regardless of immigration status.
The city announced Wednesday that cards will be issued with braille on them to help visually impaired New Yorkers.
The program is also adding Sullivan County as a regional partner as a way of accessing discounts and benefits outside of New York City.
Officials say New Yorkers whose IDNYC cards are expiring in less than 60 days or have been expired for less than six months are able to renew their card through an online portal or at a library enrollment center.
