NYPD unveils joint tactical training centers

Posted: Updated:

The NYPD is unveiling joint tactical training centers that are helping officers prepare for the field.

The center in the 47th Precinct used to be a firing range that officers used for target practice. It has now been refurbished and updated as a video simulator that puts officers and their partners in real-life situations.

Officers train in two-hour sessions simulating scenarios they could encounter on the streets. They use fake weapons with sensors that detect if an officer fires a weapon. In the training, they learn how to avoid friendly fire and how to handle dangerous situations.

After officers play out the situation on screen, their decisions are broken down and gone over with the group.

"If you're going to make the mistake, it's better to make them here rather than make them on the streets when it really matters," said First Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Tucker.

It is just one of eight tactical training centers across the city. The precinct said they would like to bring community members into the experience to show them the difficult situations and decisions police officers face.
