Fatal pedestrian crash in Greenburgh renews calls for safety enhancements

Posted: Updated:

Another fatal crash in Greenburgh earlier this week has renewed calls for pedestrian safety enhancements.

Investigators say Sandra “Sandy” Dekoubia, 57, was crossing the Bronx River Parkway at Fisher Lane just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by an SUV traveling southbound.

The intersection is just up the street from the North White Plains train station. In the mornings and evenings, it’s common to see commuters crossing the roadway to make their trains.

Dekoubia’s neighbor told News 12 that she was walking home from the train station on the night of the incident.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, who was sworn in Thursday for another two-year term, says he wrote County Executive George Latimer and county legislators to ask for enhancements to the crosswalks and better lighting.

The fatal crash this week was the sixth pedestrian death in Greenburgh since September. Officials say their 2020 budget includes funding for more sidewalks and crosswalk safety enhancements throughout the area.
