Thousands expected at White Plains New Year's Eve ball drop

Posted: Updated:

White Plains is preparing for its annual New Year's Eve ball drop.

The event draws thousands of people and has been going for nearly two decades.

City officials tell News 12 they added two brand new strobe lights inside to make it brighter and better for 2020. They say that the show will go on no matter what the weather is.

"This is not an event you can reschedule or postpone," says Mayor Tom Roach. "There's no rain date for New Year's Eve, so we're just going to go with it...."

Those who come out should expect a heavy police presence with metal detectors at all entrances. People are advised not to bring backpacks or anything else that might hold up security.

Heineken will be offering free rides to people who may have had too much to drink.

The event will happen by Main Street and Court Street.
