A holiday luncheon at Casino Royale highlighted nearly 100 grandparents in Yonkers today.

The event created by state Senate Majority Leader Andrea-Stewart Cousins consisted of food, gifts and a visit from Santa Claus.

“We started this project to show support for those grandparents, many of whom forgo their own basic needs to support their grandchildren; children whose parents are not able to care for them,” said Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins.

Community members deemed “Angels” provide gifts to grandparents who rely on fixed incomes and serve as sole caregivers to their grandchildren.

"I think it's beautiful. More and more each year, they're beginning to come together and I love it," said Gloria Jordan, grandmother of two.

Janice Richardson-Richburg may seem like a real-life angel, as she made this Christmas extra special for one grandparent. News 12 is told she bought everything, plus more, on the grandparent’s wish list and that she performs this kind gesture often.

"I love it. This is what I do. I do this all season, not just at Christmas," says Richardson-Richburg.

The Angel Project came to fruition four years ago and has been flourishing ever since.
