Some teens in New Rochelle shopped until they dropped at the Boys & Girls Club.

The Sharing Shelf is a local clothing bank for children. It brings in about 400 low-income girls to shop from a wide variety of clothes for free.

The event is called the Teen Boutique, and is meant to empower needy children and give them a much-needed confidence boost through fashion.

But more than that, the head of The Sharing Shelf explains that providing children in need with clothes is a crucial part of supporting their progress in school.

"In Westchester County, you have 55,000 children who live in low-income homes," said Director Deborah Blatt. "You also have one statistic that speaks to me -- 14% of Westchester children who are chronically absent from school, all of that is affecting their academic performance and one of the reasons kids are missing school, they miss school because they don't have clean clothing."

Nearly 100 people volunteered at the event, which is held twice a year -- in the fall and spring, since 2012.

To date, the boutique has given clothes to about 2,500 girls.
