Flames engulf former Gucci estate in Yorktown Heights, destroy main house
An early morning fire that destroyed a main house on a Yorktown Heights estate has been doused.
The fire occurred at 1230 Baptist Church Road, the former residence of luxury fashion and leather designer Paolo Gucci. Gucci sold the estate in 1996.
The 11-acre estate sits on a long, narrow road in a wooded area, complete with tennis courts, a swimming pool, horse trails as well as a guest house.
Flames engulfed the residence and ravaged the main house while smoke spewed from the roof throughout the morning.
There are no fire hydrants in the wooded area of the estate, causing the fire department to struggle as they extinguished the flames. Water pumped from a nearby pond on the estate helped to douse the fire.
The current owner of the estate, Joseph Tomlinson, was out of town and sent a statement to News 12 reporter, Michelle Brown.
"My wife and I have had the home for 20 years, we're in shock. No one was injured or hurt in the fire, just some personal belongings that are now gone. We have many memories and feelings for that home," says Tomlinson.
No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
