White Plains woman with lupus to run New York City Marathon

Posted: Updated:

A White Plains woman is overcoming a major hurdle to run in the New York City Marathon.

Amy Cargain has been running up to 16 miles multiple times a week to prepare for the marathon that's two weeks away.

Cargain, who spoke  says she has run the New York City Marathon twice, and has done "hundreds" since she was around 8 years old.

Her journey is a little more bumpy than some other runners. Cargain was diagnosed with lupus when she was 15 years old.

Lupus can damage any part of the body -- the skin, joints and organs. Cargain says she has arthritis, rashes, "And I get really tired sometimes, and I have fevers constantly."

The disease makes it difficult to get out of bed some days, but Cargain says she powers through by staying positive.

"I believe if I can do it, anyone can do it," she says.

Cargain is spreading her message of strength by running on behalf of Team Life Without Lupus on Nov. 3 -- raising money for lupus research at the Lupus Research Alliance.

This year, Cargain is also running with a flag, in honor of the heroes who sacrifice their lives to protect others.
