Showering with love: Groups unite to bring much-needed service to homelessPosted: Updated:
A nonprofit and a church banded together to bring a much-needed service to the homeless in Yonkers.
Shiloh Baptist Church, of New Rochelle, partnered with Hope Community Services to bring Showers of Hope to the homeless community.
The event featured a trailer that had three private showers for homeless people to use – who in some cases hadn’t bathed in weeks or months.
Free clothing and goodie bags with shampoo, toothbrushes and products were also provided.
This was the second Showers of Hope event. The first one took place in New Rochelle, where more than 50 people showed up.
Dorien Jefferson says the showers provide privacy that's hard to find at homeless shelters.
"I like what they are doing here and I hope eventually it can go everywhere,” he says.
Organizers are hoping to bring the “shower bus” to more communities - and more frequently. This will cost more money, which is why they are applying for a grant through Westchester County.
The next "Showers of Hope" event will take place in New Rochelle next month.
