Runners lace up for the 94th annual Yonkers MarathonPosted: Updated:
More than 1,000 runners will lace up their sneakers and pound the pavement Sunday for the 94th annual Yonkers Marathon.
The marathon is set to begin near the city's Riverfront Library with a tough, hilly course that ends in Downtown Yonkers.
"We already got 1,250 runners. It looks like it's going to be a great weather, and we're looking forward to a great day," says Yonkers Deputy Parks Commissioner Steve Sansone.
Established in 1907, the marathon is the second oldest marathon in the country. Runners do a double loop run, mainly against the direction of traffic on the streets of Yonkers and scenic Hastings-on-Hudson.
"It's just one of the things that makes the city special," says Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.
The Yonkers Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier, and many runners use it to prepare for the New York City Marathon.
