Yonkers has renamed New School Street to honor fallen veteran firefighter Patrick Joyce Jr.

In 2009, 39-year-old Patrick Joyce Jr. and two others jumped 30 feet to escape a fire they were called to put out on Waverly Street. The two other firefighters survived, but Joyce died from his injuries. He left behind his wife and two daughters.

"I remember it like it was yesterday. I just can't believe it's 2019 instead of 2009", says Rudolph Sarro, former captain of Yonkers Fire Station 1.

Raphael Roldan, convicted of setting the fire, is now serving 20 years to life.

The new sign sits on the corner of the new fire station, which is in its final stages of construction.

"I think it's perfect that we use this corner and rescue one because his passion for helping people made him a perfect fireman and made him a perfect husband a perfect dad," says Tara Joyce, of her late husband.

From now on, drivers on the street will be reminded of the heroic path the "fireman's fireman" took to serve his city.
