Smell of success? Residents raise stink over portable toilet company

Posted: Updated:

A smelly situation in Rockland County might now be abating after residents raised a stink over a portable toilet company located right behind a residential neighborhood.

The Village of West Haverstraw socked the bathroom business, John to Go, with zoning violations back in August.

The business is fighting those violations with the Zoning Board of Appeals, but in the meantime a judge mandated Tuesday that the potties have to go inside by Friday.

“They had about 300 of them, they're down to 80, and they’re going to store them when they're on site inside the building,” says village attorney John Edwards.

There was no comment from John to Go, which is also facing eviction orders.

The next Zoning Board of Appeals meeting is set to take place Oct. 9. That's the earliest the ZBA could discuss the appeal for the portable potties. Either way, village officials say they expect the ZBA to uphold the village's violations on the situation.

If the village's Zoning Board of Appeals does hear the case at its October meeting, the next step will be a public hearing, which village officials anticipate could take a few more months.
