Hundreds attend Wear Orange event demanding gun control legislation

MOUNT VERNON -

The Mount Vernon community is trying to put an end to gun violence in the Hudson Valley and the country.

Community members and local organizations came out Saturday for the Wear Orange event, which brings attention to gun violence, an issue that has plagued many parts of the country, including the city of Mount Vernon.

Moms Demand Action is stepping up and demanding that elected officials take serious legislative action to put an end to gun violence.

They say New York state has come a long way, but there is still more work to do.

Neighbors say they came to the event to be a part of the conversation and to say gun violence is not welcome in their city.

"One hundred Americans die a day from gun violence, it's ridiculous and there's no reason that we shouldn't have laws that make people safe," says Katherine Schowalter of Moms Demand Action.

Hundreds of Wear Orange events took place across the entire country this weekend, all with one goal in mind -- to bring attention to the damage gun violence causes to families and to entire communities.
