The West Point cadet who died from injuries sustained in a military vehicle accident in the academy's training area has been identified as Christopher J. Morgan.

According to a release from West Point, Morgan, 22, was from West Orange, New Jersey. He was a law and legal studies major, and a recruited athlete who was a standout member of the Army Wrestling Team.

Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams released a statement, saying, “Cadet Morgan was a valued member of the Corps of Cadets and will be missed by all. The entire community is ensuring that our cadets are being cared for physically, emotionally and spiritually. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Morgan family.” 

The vehicle was loaded with cadets on summer training when it overturned. According to officials, 19 other cadets and two soldiers were injured when the vehicle flipped over on a dirt road early Thursday morning.

Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Williams said the vehicle was transporting cadets to a land navigation site for training, near Camp Natural Bridge.

He said the cadets are seniors at the U.S. Military Academy.

Morgan wrestled for West Point and for his high school in West Point where he finished fifth place his graduating year during state championships. His coaches remembered him as a talented, hard-working athlete who loved his sport.

Retired Army Command Sgt. Major and Highland Town Councilman Ty King also issued a statement about the tragedy, saying,  “We mourn with our military community here in West point… Our heart goes out to the loved ones and the parents and what we call battle buddies of the lost cadet."

A private vigil for cadets and the West Point community is being held at the academy tonight. A memorial and funeral service will be held next week.
