Ossining fights for $10 million grant from NY to transform downtown

OSSINING -

Ossining is competing for a $10 million grant from New York state that would give new life to the village’s downtown area.

The grant is called the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. One area in each of the state's 10 regions will receive that money to transform their downtown communities.

Ossining was a finalist in 2016 and 2018 in the Mid-Hudson region but was not selected. They face competitors from all of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties.

Previous years' winners were Middletown, Kingston and New Rochelle.

The village of Ossining has asked residents to share as many ideas as possible in an online survey.

Mayor Victoria Gearity says she'll share those specific ideas after the application are reviewed since the competition is high. If Ossining is chosen, residents tell News 12 they'd love to see more parking, new restaurants and another park.

The round of applications is due May 31. Gearity says the village should find out if it’s a finalist in June, and if it’s the recipient by the end of the summer.
