The water and waste recycling company Suez hopes to relocate from West Nyack Road to Old Mill Road -- right off of the Lake deForest Reservoir -- by the end of the year. But the move has some residents concerned.
More than 300 people have signed an online petition to stop the expansion. Resident Rick Tannenbaum claims that the company plans to deforest about seven acres and build a 60,000-square-foot parking lot – upon which it will build a 12,000-square-foot building. Tannenbaum says he is afraid that removing so many trees will make flooding in the area worse than it already is.
Original plans included using tanks of gasoline and diesel fuel to fill up Suez vehicles, but the company agreed to cut that out of the deal after people raised concerns about runoff into the reservoir.
"We have the same tanks here at our current location and we felt though that they were safe and reliable," says Bill Madden, director of external affairs for Suez.
When asked whether the decision was permanent, Madden did not directly say "yes" or "no." He did say that drivers would fill up at local gas stations. Madden says increased demand for their services has given them no choice but to move.
Suez will host a neighborhood forum on Monday, May 20, at the West Nyack Fire Department at 7:00 p.m. The private forum is invitation only for the residents in the immediate vicinity of the property.
