A woman from Westchester has succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the deadly Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka.
Chelsea Decaminada was dedicated to helping others. She was on assignment in Sri Lanka for the U.S. Department of Commerce when she was caught in a terrorist attack that killed hundreds of people.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross released a statement saying it was a great hope that Decaminada would recover from her injuries. Ross says Decaminada died on May 5.
Ross wrote in part, "Chelsea devoted her life to public service, and her dedication and spirit were a model for all of us at Commerce. She served her country with distinction. As we mourn her loss, we must continue to fight terrorism around the world."
Westchester County Executive Goerge Latimer released a statement that reads in part, "Westchester County mourns the loss of one of our own. Chelsea Decaminada, a Peace Corps volunteer and 2011 graduate of John Jay Cross River, was the victim of the horrific terrorist attacks targeting Christians in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday...Please join me in offering condolences to the Decaminada family during this difficult time."
According to reports, authorities in Sri Lanka blamed a local Islamic extremist group shortly after the Easter Sunday attack, although they say the bombers had outside help. The Islamic State group claimed it was behind the attack but provided no evidence of involvement.
