Officials identify 7 new measles exposure sites in Rockland County

NANUET -

Seven new measles exposure sites have been identified in Rockland County, according to health officials.

The new exposure sites include a busy Home Depot on Hutton Avenue in Nanuet; two Kosher supermarkets, two synagogues, and a pharmacy all in Monsey.

Additionally, health officials said an infected person rode in several taxis with the "La Familia Taxi" service.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day said the infected person didn't know he had the measles. If he had, the county could have fined him with a $2,000 fine - the latest penalty set from the health commissioner.

As Rockland County health officials continue to battle the measles outbreak, members of the Orthodox Jewish community say they are battling rising anti-Semitism due to the virus.

Rockland Jewish leaders say it is a misconception that Orthodox Jews don't vaccinate their families.

Rabbi Jeremy Ruberg, of the New City Jewish Center, warns, "Don't just assume that just because they have a yarmulke, they didn't vaccinate their children."

Health officials said if anyone visited any of the locations at the times listed and are pregnant, have an infant under six months, or have a compromised immune system, they should visit their doctor immediately.

As of this past Wednesday, the number of confirmed measles cases in Rockland has climbed to 225.

The Rockland County Health Department will continue to offer free measles vaccinations.
