The race for Yonkers mayor is now a little larger as a Democratic challenger has announced that she is throwing her hat into the race.
Karen Beltran is kicking off her campaign to challenge two-term incumbent Mayor Mike Spano.
She says while collecting signatures to get on the ballot, residents shared their concerns with her, including the mayor's term limit that was extended by the City Council last fall from two terms to three terms. This allows Mayor Spano to seek re-election.
The mayor’s Democratic challengers say two terms are enough.
“I found that to be offensive… presumptive, pretentious of this administration to go ahead and do that against the will of the people. And when I was gathering signatures for the petition to get on the ballot… that’s the number one issue citizens raised to me," says Beltran.
Mayor Spano responded to Beltran’s entry into the race, as well as fellow challenger Ivy Reeves.
“Yonkers has made great strides during my time as mayor, and l look forward to discussing those successes with both Karen Beltran and Ivy Reeves,” he said in a statement.
The Democratic primary is June 25.
